Wimbledon: July 2 Recap
Posted July 3, 2010 – 6:19 am in: TennisThe men’s semifinal day was rather disappointing, as the level of competition was way below the expectations. Both of the semifinal matches were decided in straight sets, which is not what the fans on Centre Court expected.
The first match was between Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic. Berdych won the first set 6-3 in 33 minutes. The critical second set was a much tougher battle which lasted for more than hour. It came down to a tiebreak and both players had set points, but Berdych eventually won it 9-7. In fact, the tiebreak ended on a double fault by Djokovic. In the third set, Djokovic didn’t show much resistance as Berdych easily cruised and won it 6-3. Hitting 34 winners and winning 81% on first serves allowed Berdych to advance to his first ever Grand Slam final. He became the first Czech man since Ivan Lendl in 1987 to reach the Wimbledon final.
The second match between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray was probably the most anticipated clash of the tournament, at least from a British perspective. However, Nadal defeated Murray 6-4 7-6(6) 6-4 in just over 2 hours. It was a close match, but yet it was decided in straight sets. Murray had very few opportunities to change the outcome of the match, winning only 1 out of 3 break points. The only real chances Murray had were in the second set tiebreak, but Nadal was simply too solid from all corners of the court. For the second straight year, the British hopes of a homegrown Wimbledon champion ended in the semifinals. This will be Nadal’s fourth career Wimbledon final.
